Academic Excellence Scholarships

Pending appropriation of State funds, scholarships for Academic Excellence will be awarded to top high school seniors in June 2020. North Collins Jr/Sr High School will select the three (3) top students using the Rank-in-Class method.  These students will be chosen using class rank at the end of their junior year.

Seniors are encouraged to check out studentscholarships.org for a listing of scholarships New York State school district students may be eligible for.  There are hundreds of thousands of dollars of scholarships available on this website, and most are easy to apply for.  

Erie Community College offers many scholarships which may be accessed on the ECC website. Click on the quick links drop down box and then click on scholarship opportunities. The scholarship packet will display the criteria for each scholarship available.

In addition, there are a number of local scholarships available to graduating seniors. All applications are due by Friday, April 10, 2020.

Below are local, regional and national scholarships which may be of interest to you. In most cases, applications are available in the Guidance Office for anyone interested. Each scholarship has a different deadline, so please pay close attention to those dates to ensure your application is received in time. 

 


AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW) SCHOLARSHIP


Two scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded.  

Criteria:

  • Must attend full time any accredited college (two or four year) in the fall.
  • Grade point average of at least 95%.
  • Girls attending Erie or Niagara County high school are eligible.

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP

The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education and a desire to contribute to society.  The scholarships are given to deserving students each year and range in award value from $10,000 to $25,000.

Criteria:

  • Be enrolled full-time as a high school senior in the US with plans to enter college no later than the Fall semester following graduation.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the US. (students may start their studies at a 2 year institution and then transfer to a 4 year institution.)
  • Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required.)
  • Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities.
  • Hold a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
  • Be a US citizen.

POYNTON LAW SCHOLARSHIP

This $1,000 scholarship is judged and awarded primarily on merit and need. Applicant must plan to attend college by the fall semester of 2020 and have minimum GPA OF 3.0. Please visit the Poyton Law website for more information and application.

CHARACTER COUNCIL OF WNY SCHOLARSHIP

Harvest Time Partners, in collaboration with The Character Council of WNY, is pleased to offer $1,000 scholarships to college or trade school bound seniors who exemplify character in their daily lives. The scholarship will be made payable directly to the student's chosen post-secondary institution.

SOUTHWESTERN ASSN. OF VOLUNTEER FIREMEN SCHOLARSHIP

The Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen will award one $600 and three $150 scholarships to top candidates in June 2020. All applicants must be either an active member, OR child or grandchild of an active member of the Southwestern Assn. of Volunteer Firemen or the SWAVF Ladies Auxiliary.

Applications may be obtained from the SWAVF website.

Application must be postmarked: April 15, 2020


NED CARTER SCHOLARSHIP

The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York is pleased to announce the “Ned Carter” Scholarship availability of four (4) $1,500 scholarships to New York State High School Seniors who will be graduating in June 2020.  The student must be related to a firefighter, be a firefighter, or be an Explorer/Junior Member in a fire department, that is a current paid member in good standing of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York.

Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Application must be postmarked by: February 22, 2020


SCALP AND BLADE SCHOLARSHIP

$2,500 per year, renewable for a total of 4 years.  Scholarship total is $10,000 and is available to a male senior, student who demonstrates outstanding academic accomplishments in terms of grades and college entrance exams, extracurricular activities, community involvement as well as financial need.

Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

EL DABE RITTER SCHOLARSHIP

This $1,500 scholarship is provided by the El Dabe Ritter Law Offices to support those seniors who want a higher education.  Applicants should be enrolled in an accredited university in the USA and must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.  The scholarship may be used for any form of school related expenses.

PETER P. TYCZ II MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A $250 scholarship is available to graduating seniors who meet the following criteria:

  • reside in Niagara or Erie County
  • has a relative who is/was a veteran (reservists who have completed 180 continuous days of service are considered veterans.)
  • shows a unique blend of academic achievement and community service
  • anticipates enrollment in an accredited program of higher education beginning in the fall of 2020

NORMAN F. LOCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This $1,000 scholarship is presented in the memory of Norman F. Locher, Past President of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association. 

Eligibility: 

  • Be a high school senior who has exemplified community involvement in the County of Erie.
  • Preference will be given to students who assist in the emergency services, and are matriculating in the Emergency Services fields of Fire or EMS.
  • Demonstrate at least a “C” average throughout high school.
  • Show evidence of acceptance to a two or four year college program.
  • Be a resident of an area served by a volunteer fire company.

ARTHUR E. COSGROVE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This $1,000 scholarship is presented in the memory of Arthur E. Cosgrove Past Treasurer of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association. 

Eligibility: 

  • Be a high school senior who has exemplified community involvement in the County of Erie.
  • Preference will be given to students who assist in the emergency services, and are matriculating in the Emergency Services fields of Fire or EMS.
  • Demonstrate at least a “C” average throughout high school.
  • Show evidence of acceptance to a two or four year college program.
  • Be a resident of an area served by a volunteer fire company.

ARTHUR BLACHOWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A $1,000 scholarship in memory of Arthur Blachowski, past president of the Erie County Fire District Officers Association is available.  Criteria as follows: 

  • Be a high school senior who has exemplified community involvement in the County of Erie.Preference will be given to students who assist in the emergency services, and are matriculating in the Emergency Services fields of Fire or EMS.

GERARD J. BUCKENMEYER FASNY VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must be actively participating as a volunteer firefighter or junior firefighter to apply for the twenty-five $1,500 scholarships available this year.

THE BENJAMIN MILAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1994 to honor Ben Milak who had lost his life to leukemia.  Initiated by several of Ben’s teachers, the scholarship honors his memory and is meant to be a reflection of who he was.  It is awarded annually to a graduating senior(s) who like Ben struggles with hearing loss, a learning disability or who has battled cancer.   The recipient must possess a realistic career goal, be community minded and have a respect for the natural world.

THE CRISTIN ANN BAMBINO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Applicant must be a special education student who is college bound. 

The goal of this scholarship is to reward a student who has worked through his or her special challenges to complete high school and gain acceptance into a college or university. Seven regional winners will receive a $3,000 award, one second prize winner will receive a $4,000 award and one statewide winner will receive a $5,000 award.

THE PAUL JENSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is available to a student who has excelled in design in his or her high school career. It will be awarded to two individuals on a statewide basis.  The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award.

JOHN GONCALVES STUDENT HUMANITARIAN SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is able to demonstrate a record of involvement and work for a cause or organization that actively promotes social justice, equal opportunity, relief of human suffering or similar aspirations generally understood to be within the meaning of humanitarian activity. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award.

EIGHTH DISTRICT FEDERATED GARDEN CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

A $1,000 scholarship is available to graduating seniors enrolling in a course of study in a horticultural, environmental, or related field.

BUFFALO URBAN LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Buffalo Urban League Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high seniors based on character, academic achievement, financial need or community service. There are one time awards of $250 to four year awards of up to $4,000.

Applications are available in the guidance office.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 13, 2020.
